Textbook chapter 7: Using Spreadsheets to Think About Numbers

  1. 1. Can you use spreadsheets for the younger grades or is that too difficult for them just yet?
    2. Should the students be working with you while you are doing the spreadsheet and graph? Or should they observe first and then try on their own after they understand it?

  2. 1. According to this chapter it states that most people are scared of numbers, but spreadsheets can help students think about the concepts behind the numbers. Why are teachers not using spreadsheets in the classroom to help eliminate the fear of numbers?
    2. How can teachers teach numbers, math, science, etc to practical situations?

  3. 1. At what age would you begin to teach students to use Excel, and spreadsheets? When can they grasp the concept of equations, formulas etc.?

    2. Spreadsheets are a great way to teach students about numbers, formulas, and equations. You use them to teach students about these concepts. They need to have some kind of background before doing so, right? Or can you just start off a lesson about the different ways to solve math problems by using these spreadsheet?

  5. 1. I wasn't taught how to use Excel or spreadsheets until I elected to take a computer class in high school, at what age should we be teaching kids how to use this?
    2. In areas of poverty a lot of kids don't have computers at home or even the schools don't have a lot of computers. How do we teach kids in these areas with tools like this when it's likely that they won't get a lot of practice with it?

  6. l) If a teacher notices early on during the process of some students making a spreadsheet, that their information might be wrong, should the teacher interrupt the process and help the students correct their errors, or would the students learn more from the experience of seeing the results of entering the wrong data?

    2)Making spreadsheets seems like it would be a fun activity for students. Wouldn't a teacher need to be on the alert for student's that are just having a good time making spreadsheets, but don't really understand or care about the basic concept that they are to be learning about?

    1. The use of spreadsheets seems like a good idea but the text cautioned that teaching math concepts and spreadsheet concepts at the same time can often times confuse the student, since math is taught everyday how do you avoid that problem?

    2. Are new teachers required to demonstrate their knowledge of problem solving with spreadsheets for board tests? It doesn't make sense to have inexperienced teachers "trying" to teach the spreadsheet logistics if they have no idea what they're doing i.e, Ms.Clayton's fifth grade class.

  8. 1. I was wondering what a teacher would do if a child used a lot of their time and needed to make their spreadsheet perfect? For example, needed help on every part and wasn't happy unless it was perfect in their eyes. How would you address this child?

    2. What age is not appropriate for spreadsheets? Do you think we could use them for every grade? When should we expect that the children will know how to work a spreadsheet?

  9. 1. How do you make a spreadsheet usable for students in every grade? Can you make them accessable to every grade?
    2. Spreadsheets can be very complicated and the information at hand can easily be mis-entered. Is this something you teach the kids to make perfect or do you let them try to do it on their own and intervine later?

    2. Beginning students at a young age with using spreadsheets, could this eliminate many children's fear of math, science, etc. increasing the amount of interest students have in those subjects?

  11. Q 1. The text explains to use cation when using spread sheet to enhance a concept: to teach the spread sheet first then the concept. In teaching the concept do the students need to reason and understand the formulas completely to be able to see that a click on the mouse will get them the answer?

    Q 2.If technical problems occur that I as teacher can't solve what do you recommend to do to keep the professional image in front of the class? for example if the students enter wrong data or the formula was not entered correctly or if I need to have all set for them to just enter numbers?

    2. The chapter discusses that it is important for teachers when teaching a math concept while using spreadsheets to not have an overload of information that the students don't understand the concept. As teachers how can we be sure that the cognitive load isn't too much for the students?

  15. 1. I found it interesting that the text said to teach the spreadsheet before teaching the concept. But does knowing the concept before hand help the student understand what is happening in the spreadsheet and that the answer does not happen magically in a cell?

    2. I have worked quite a bit with spreadsheets in my adult years and I still sometimes get confused using them. How would I integrate these into younger classroom where they are learning the concept of number operations without making it more confusing for them?

    2. I think spreadsheet is also difficult for adults as it requires many formulas to use. Do we need pre-lesson before using spreadsheet in the classroom with kids? How can we do it?
